BEER WRITER OF THE YEAR IS ANNOUNCED
Zak Avery has been crowned Beer Writer of the Year at the prestigious British Guild of Beer Writers Annual Awards Dinner 2008 (11 December 2008).
The Beer Writer of the Year is chosen from one of six category winners which seek to find the very best of beer writing and journalism in the UK.
Zak, a Leeds-based freelance journalist and beer retailer, is an enthusiast of all global styles of beer, as well as enjoying it with food and talking about it.
Last year’s winner and chairman of the judges, Alastair Gilmour, said: “Zak is an exceptional talent and his knowledge and passion for beer really comes across in his journalism. It was a tough decision as this year’s entrants were of the highest standard.”
Zak also scooped the award for Brains SA Gold New Media and was joined on the podium by the following winners:
o Budweiser Budvar John White Travel bursary 2008 – awarded to winning freelance journalists Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham
o The Bishop’s Finger Award for Beer and Food Writing 2008 - awarded to Ben McFarland
o The Wells & Young’s Business to Business Journalism Award 2008 – awarded for the second successive year to Adam Withrington, Drinks Editor, The Publican. Runner-up was Larry Nelson, Brewers’ Guardian
o Deuchars IPA Regional Journalism 2008 – winner was Brian Glover, The Western Mail, Cardiff. The runner up was The Liverpool Post’s Mike Chapple.
o Coors Brewers National Journalism Award 2008 – The winner was Jeff Evans for his book A Beer A Day. The runner up was freelance journalist Adrian Tierney-Jones
o British Guild of Beer Writers Brewer of the Year 2008 – Alastair Hook, Meantime Brewery, London
This is the 21st year of the Guild Dinner, which has become a key date in the journalistic calendar.
British Guild of Beer Writers chairman Tim Hampson said: “The awards are a fabulous celebration of the very best of British beer writing. The breadth and depth of the work created by the winners show that beer is being treated very seriously.”
More than 170 journalists, brewers and pub operators attended the dinner at the Tower Bridge Hilton in Central London.
